This past weekend was one of the best days of the summer so far: the rookie party for my summer ultimate team. The best part? It’s a brand new team, so all of us (coach included) were rookies. In order to allow everyone on the team to have the full “rookie-ing” experience, we enlisted the help of two outside people to organize the party. And they did an amazing job.
We were all placed on different teams and instructed to come up with a theme. After waffling for a while, my team finally decided to be “dads on vacation” – aka golfers. The other groups were Fruit Ninjas, Hawaiian tourists, and Pokemon. Needless to say, we were a colourful bunch.
Now, as “adults”, people generally frown if you try to share a jungle gym with seven year olds. However, as we learned that evening, a group of 18-30 year olds dressed in ridiculous clothing is more a call for laughter than cause for concern. People were definitely taking photos and videos of our various escapades and the kids loved watching us sprint around like lunatics.
The entire evening was like a game of grounders; relay after relay on various playgrounds, with long stretches of running in between. And it was great.
Never thought I’d say this, but it’s too bad you’re only a rookie once.
If you don’t know what a house hippo is, either you aren’t from Canada or you aren’t Canadian enough. Watch this.
Some poor quality photos of the other three teams:
